Quote of the Minute

Dear humble readers,

It's Christmas Eve.

Usually I feel something different about now, like there's something magical in the air. But today, and yesterday and possibly the day before, I don't feel it.

I was walking around Ames yesterday in the vain search for a flannel blanket as a gift and was just struck with this sadness as, of all songs, "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" came on overhead.

Its not a happy song. It should be a happy song, but it's not a happy song. This is Christmas, why the hell not?

I watched "Angus" last night and the title character said at one point after his grandfather died and he had to decide whether or not to go to the dance, "I think I have to stop wanting things." That movie is wonderful. Please buy it or watch it the next time it's on tv.

Everyone should just stop wanting things. We'd be a lot better off if we did.

And to my returning readers, welcome back. I've sent a nice email to a certain one of you in reply to your guestbook signing. You know who you are. In the spirit of the holiday season and the approaching new year, what I wrote to you was in fun. I sincerely hope you took it that way.

Once again, everyone, have a Happy Holiday and a divine New Year full of clean slates and happiness. Be safe, well and warm.
